A father had two identical twin boys, 10 years old.  One was an extreme pessimist and always saw the worst in any situation.  The other was the extreme optimist and always saw the best.

At Christmas the father wanted to put both boys to the test.  For the pessimist, he went to ToysRUs and bought the pessimist virtually every toy in the place and put them under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning.  For the optimist, he only gave him a paper bag full of horse manure.

On Christmas morning, the pessimist, when he saw all of the gifts, was sure that he had cancer or some malady and this was really bad news.  The optimist was elated with his manure - he could fertilize Mom’s rose garden and the vegetable garden with it.

Finally the father said to the optimist “I don’t understand.  Your brother got dozens of presents and he is sure the end of the world is coming.  You get a bag of manure and you are delighted.  How can you be happy with a bag of manure?”

The optimist said, “Dad, the way I see it, with all of this horse manure, there has got to be a pony around here somewhere.”

This story abounds in many versions and we have so far been unable to find the originator to give him or her credit.  But, suffice it to say, it continues to be a truism in that if you can't see the possibilities, you are never going to find your pony - regardless what your personal pony may be.  But, to do this, you are going to have to stir the pot and start looking up.
